The Arkansas toothpick was said to be the real name of the famous Bowie knife but the real reason for the name was because it belonged to Arkansas itself. James Black lived here and created fine edged knives at that time. Some of the knife makers copied his knives and brought them to the United States whereas Colonel James “Jim” Bowie used it in the Texas revolution. Because of that, the Arkansas toothpick and the Bowie knife shared the same craftsmanship since that day. However, the Bowie knife was more popular at that time, leaving the Arkansas toothpick behind, thus making it unknown to some people.
The original Arkansas toothpick was said to be a long one that Bowie used in the Sandbar Duel, where he became famous at fighting with knives. It was mainly used as a fighting knife rather than a survival tool for the jungle. There have been a series of debates that stated which is better and that some people even posted the Bowie knife and theArkansas toothpick, showing the difference in size. Nevertheless, the museum of Arkansas has proven that the knife was originally theirs and that the fame of the Bowie knife was because of the late Colonel’s action in the revolution. The collectors actually knew about the history of the knife and they consider the Arkansas toothpick as the Bowie’s second name. Even though some would say that they are both different, they possess the same thing and that is… as a tool for surviving life itself.
